December is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. During the biggest gift-giving month of the year, it is important to be cautious when buying presents for your little ones.
In the past, there have been many toy-related hospitalizations. This led to recalls of millions of toys. Since then, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has established a rigorous toy safety system, but there are extra steps you can take to keep your children safe.
- Inspect toys before you buy them. Avoid toys that shoot, have sharp edges, or can be pulled apart easily, especially if the toy is for a baby or a toddler.
- Make sure it is an appropriate toy for the child by checking the age and skill level marked on the toy.
- Check the label! Make sure the toy has a label for ATSM (American Society for Testing and Materials), which proves that it meets the current safety standards.
- Avoid toys with ropes, cords, or those that can heat up.
- Avoid crayons and markers unless labeled non-toxic.
- Any gifts such as skateboards, scooters, or other riding toys should be given with a helmet or other necessary protective gear.
- Do not give toys with small parts such as magnets or button-shaped batteries. When ingested, these can be extremely dangerous, especially for young children who tend to put things in their mouths.
Once the presents are open, discard any plastic wrapping or any other toy packaging immediately before they can become a hazard. There is nothing more joyous than seeing the smiles on your children's faces when they open their presents. Let's make sure we keep these happy faces safe this holiday season.
