Boating and Jet Ski Safety for Kids and Teens

With summer here, many families are heading out to enjoy time on the water. While it’s a lot of fun, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind to ensure everyone has a great time and stays safe.

First things first, life jackets. They are non-negotiable for kids and teens whenever they’re on or around water. Make sure the life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard-approved and fits properly. It should be snug but comfortable, and all straps should be fastened.

A life jacket should fit in a manner that the child should be able to breathe easily but not slip out of the jacket. If the jacket rises above their ears when pulled up, it’s too loose.

Before heading out, it’s essential to go over some basic safety rules. Always have a responsible adult supervising, and make sure kids know how to swim. Even strong swimmers should wear life jackets.

For jet skiing, riders should be at least 16 years old and have taken a safety course. It’s vital to understand the rules of the water, just like the rules of the road. Keep a safe distance from other boats, swimmers, and obstacles, and always ride during daylight hours.

Hydration and sun protection are also crucial. Make sure kids drink plenty of water and reapply sunscreen every two hours. Hats and sunglasses are also a good idea to protect from the sun’s harmful rays.

Boating and jet skiing are fantastic ways to enjoy the summer and create lasting memories. By following these safety tips, you can help ensure that your family stays safe while having fun.

 Stay safe, and happy boating!
