In recognition of American Heart Month, the Nicklaus Children's Research Institute (NCRI) is celebrating the future of cardiac research at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. With decades of experience in pediatric cardiology, the new Chief of Cardiology, Shyam Sathanandam M.D., is enthusiastic about the future of clinical trials at Nicklaus Children's.
Dr. Sathanandam is joining the Nicklaus Children's family in March from the University of Tennessee and LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Sathanandam specializes in interventional cardiology for children born prematurely. During his time in Tennessee, he contributed to seven books, published more than 50 research articles, and was awarded seven grants to support his research.
Physicians in pediatric cardiology must often adapt procedures, devices, and instruments originally designed for treatment of similar conditions in adults. With congenital heart defects affecting 40,000 babies each year, the need for advances in pediatric cardiology is higher than ever. Excited about the possibilities, Dr. Sathanandam said, “The future of research in pediatric cardiology is infinite.”

Innovative research-based procedures, devices, and medication designed for pediatric cardiac patients is a field rife with possibilities. In addition to modifying treatments for a smaller size, pediatric cardiologists must also adapt to the ever-changing physiology of a child. These alterations can result in four times as many invasive procedures required for a child compared to an adult.
Currently the Principal Investigator (PI) for two randomized clinical trials aimed at determining the best treatment for conditions affecting premature babies, Dr. Sathanandam is passionate about leveraging research to guide clinical practice. “Research is a tool that we have at our disposal to ensure we recommend the best treatment.”
As he considers the future of Cardiology at Nicklaus Children's, Dr. Sathanandam looks forward to fostering a research-based department. His goal is to create an environment where innovative new ideas in pediatric cardiology can be realized through research. As part of his vision, he hopes to see a variety of research projects from basic science through to translational research and clinical trials, bringing the best clinical care to Nicklaus Children's patients.
The NCRI welcomes Dr. Sathanandam and looks forward to partnering with him to advance pediatric cardiology through research.
