"I am very grateful to Nicklaus Children’s because they saved my mother’s life.
My mother Martha was a patient at the age of 11 years old at what was then Variety Children’s for Polio which was above her neck, with a focus in her eyes. She was there during the summer months of 1951 and remembers her doctor with much love, Dr. Shepard who took care of her, as well as the nurses and singers that would perform, like Sophia Tucker. My mother received great care and much needed kindness, especially when they could not pay all the bills that added up. My mother went on to become an ICU Nurse, married my dad and had four children, me being one of them. She has been retired now for some time, and after my dad died she remarried and is living in North Georgia in a small town called Mineral Bluff (on a mountain).
She is very proud that I work at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and so am I.
Happy Birthday and thank you Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for saving my mom’s life!”
