Ed Martinez, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), has been selected by the South Florida Business Journal as a 2013 “CIO of the Year.” Under Mr. Martinez’s leadership, MCH’s Information Technology Department has championed the use of technology in ways that optimize customer service, improve patient engagement and empower the patient and the consumer. Mr. Martinez has also been recognized as the CHIME 2012 Innovator of the Year Award for his efforts in mobile health programs at MCH.
The IT Department most recently launched the Fit4KidsApp, which enables patients and families to order from the hospital’s cafeteria and gift shop as well as find their way throughout the hospital all through their mobile devices. MCH is also working on a telemedicine center that will enable families to virtually connect to MCH subspecialists securely from anywhere around the world using advanced mobile apps connected to medical diagnostic equipment.
The South Florida Business Journal 2013 CIO Awards, presented by Steven Douglas Associates, honors chief information officers who lead their organizations in delivering business value and innovative use of IT in the private and public company sector. The awards recognize South Florida-based CIOs who have demonstrated these six key characteristics:
- Ability to work productively with business partners
- Alignment of technology direction with the company's strategy
- Innovation, either internally or in the form of new products or services
- Growth in their information technology team
- Demonstration of strong leadership
- Involvement in their community
The awards program took place on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at The IGFA. Mr. Martinez was awarded in the category of private companies with more than $250 million in revenue.
