“Nicolas was born in Peru with an aortic coarctation and had an emergency surgery when he was 3 weeks old. We were advised at that time that a second procedure would be necessary. Our local pediatrician monitored him closely and was in constant contact with Nicklaus Children's Hospital, whom he had recommended for most of his complicated heart patients.

For us being so far from the USA it was privilege to be so near to Nicklaus Children's Hospital. That made us feel confident about Nicolas’ recovery. When he was 3 months old, Nicolas underwent a valve procedure at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. We received excellent care in the ICU, which was a pretty familiar and friendly environment. This is the point when he really started thriving.

The commitment of the Nicklaus Children's Hospital staff was great. Nicolas underwent another unexpected valve procedure at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in 2009. In less than 24 hours Nicolas was running again with his friends and cousins. We will always be grateful to the Nicklaus Children's Hospital team for giving so much care and hope to a family outside US.”

Saving Lives with a Sudden Cardiac Arrest Readiness Program

December 20, 2024 – Though rare, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the young causes tragic events that impact the entire community. Roughly 7,000 people under the age of 18 will suffer a cardiac arrest annually in the U.S. Because of education and hands-on training to school faculty, countless lives have been saved nationally. In just two years, eight lives have been saved in South Florida schools.
