When blood supply is cut off to the bone, leading to the death of bone tissue, this is known as avascular necrosis. This loss of bone tissue can have severe consequences for those impacted by it.
Injuries or accidents that impact a joint and nearby blood vessels are a frequent cause of avascular necrosis. It can also occur due to blood vessel blockages from fats or as a complication of certain diseases.
Early on, pain relievers and other medications can be used to treat avascular necrosis. As the disease progresses, it may require surgical procedures and other therapies to remove the damaged portion of bone and replace it with new bone.
