At just three months old, Samuel's life took a turn that would test the strength, faith and resilience of his family. Diagnosed with intractable epilepsy (when seizures can't be completely controlled by medicines), Samuel faced an uphill battle characterized by frequent and severe seizures, developmental delays and numerous health complications that puzzled even the most skilled doctors.
Hospitalized at three months old at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, Samuel underwent an Electroencephalogram (EEG), revealing a chaotic pattern known as hypsarrhythmia, or Infantile Spasms. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans presented a "gray mushy" appearance of his brain and confirmed his seizures were originating in both hemispheres of his brain, ruling out Hemispherectomy surgery to stop the seizures. This was just the beginning of a long medical journey, involving countless hospitalizations, medications, steroid injections and many additional diagnoses such as Cerebral Palsy, Spastic Quadriplegia, Cortical Visual Impairment, and severe hypotonia that significantly impacted his ability to feed and grow like other infants.
As Samuel's condition evolved, so did the complexity of his care. From aspirations due to his inability to swallow properly to the discovery of Multifocal Cortical Dysplasia (a neurological disorder characterized by the abnormal development of brain cells in multiple areas of the cerebral cortex, often leading to epilepsy and developmental issues), each step seemed to lead to another obstacle. Yet, amidst the ceaseless appointments, tests and hospital stays, Samuel's story became one not just of challenges but of incredible perseverance and hope.
The turning point in Samuel's journey came with the implementation of a ketogenic diet, which, against all odds, significantly reduced his seizures. This success opened a new chapter, allowing Samuel to develop a personality, express emotions and recognize his family - achievements that, to his parents, felt nothing short of miraculous.
Yet, Samuel's battles were far from over. With the onset of puberty, his scoliosis worsened, necessitating a complex posterior spinal fusion surgery with Dr. Stephen G. George at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Center for Spinal Disorders. This 10-hour-long procedure, while daunting, brought an unexpected miracle - not only did it correct his spine, but it also alleviated other health issues like severe constipation that had plagued him due to the scoliosis.
Today at 19 years old, Samuel, still facing significant developmental delays and bound to a wheelchair, lives a life full of love and joy. His smile, recognition of his family, and the simple joy he finds in the presence of his loved ones are testaments to his incredible journey of resilience.
Reflecting on the journey, Samuel's father shared a profound insight: "My wife and I have come to realize that maintaining a positive attitude and having faith truly made everything much easier for us. When you concentrate on the positives and celebrate the significant milestones, it's genuinely a rewarding experience."
