Jasiah's Journey

For Kimberly, the journey began 26 weeks into her pregnancy when she received life-changing news: her unborn son, Jasiah, had a cleft lip and palate. Just two weeks later, Kimberly developed severe preeclampsia and had to give birth immediately. It was a whirlwind of emotions and challenges from the very start.

Cleft lip and palate are conditions with an opening in the upper lip and the roof of the mouth, which can affect functions such as eating, speaking, and breathing. These conditions require specialized care and multiple surgeries to correct.

Early on, Kimberly navigated a complex maze of medical appointments and procedures. Amidst this chaos, she met Dr. Steinberg at Nicklaus Children's Hospital. Dr. Jordan Steinberg, a pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgeon, serves as Surgical Director of the Craniofacial Program.

"Meeting Dr. Steinberg was like finding a lifeline," Kimberly recalls. "His expertise and kindness reassured me that Jasiah was in the best hands."

The Nicklaus Children’s Craniofacial Center is renowned for its comprehensive, team-based approach to care. In one visit, patients like Jasiah receive care from various pediatric specialists, including those in plastic surgery, ENT, genetics, orthodontics, audiology, speech therapy, psychology, rehabilitation, dental care, and social work. This multi-disciplinary approach ensures that each child receives tailored treatment to meet their unique needs, significantly improving outcomes.

At eight months, Jasiah faced his first major hurdle: surgery to repair his cleft lip. "He didn't understand what was happening, and it was so hard to see him in pain," Kimberly shares. Yet, one week later, Jasiah's strength and resilience became evident. His new smile, bright and beautiful, brought immense joy to Kimberly's heart.

The journey continued with a second surgery to repair his cleft palate. Before the surgery, he struggled with eating and speaking, which added to Kimberly's worries. The operation was another significant milestone. "Seeing him eat and speak better after the surgery was a huge relief," Kimberly says. "It felt like a tremendous victory."

Balancing the demands of Jasiah's care was incredibly challenging for Kimberly. There were countless moments of doubt and exhaustion, but giving up was never an option. Her determination and Jasiah’s incredible bravery made every step of the journey worthwhile. The specific and focused treatment for his cleft lip and palate resulted in significant improvements.

Today, Jasiah is a thriving, happy child whose smile lights up every room. His journey is a testament to the extraordinary care provided by Dr. Steinberg and the team at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, and his mother's unyielding love and strength.

Jasiah's story is one of hope, healing, and the power of perseverance. It inspires other families facing similar challenges, showing them that with comprehensive care at Nicklaus and unwavering support, their children can overcome the most difficult obstacles and lead joyful, fulfilling lives.
