Dr. Salyakina honored as a March of Dimes Woman of Distinction

Women of Distinction honors and celebrates women leaders in South Florida chosen by the community and selected by an esteemed committee of past recipients and distinguished women leaders with a complement of events that culminate with a grand luncheon.

May 03, 2016 – The Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Nicklaus Children's Hospital partnered with The Tribe, a young Jewish adult group based in Miami Beach, for "Don't Get Passed over. Get Screened!" During this event that took place at The Clevelander in Marlins Park, young adults learned about Jewish genetic diseases and ways to screen for them. They also learned of an upcoming screening at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach on May 17 for people ranging in ages 18-44.

Chabad at UCF hosts screenings for Jewish genetic diseases

March 16, 2016 – Chabad at UCF hosted screenings for Jewish Genetic Diseases at their weekly barbecue on March 15. Representatives from the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami stopped at UCF on their trip around the country to raise awareness of these diseases.

Testing for Jewish genetic diseases

August 18, 2014 – Local Jews recently got screened for 19 Jewish genetic diseases.The Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Miami Children's Hospital provided these screenings as well as educational sessions at both Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach and Kspace in Aventura. Deborah Wasserman, genetic counselor and outreach coordinator for the Victor Center Miami, said approximately 10 people got screened at Temple Beth Sholom and approximately 12 at Kspace. Approximately 30 people at Kspace listened to the lecture.

Beth Shalom in Brandon offers Jewish health seminar

Congregation Beth Shalom of Brandon, 706 Bryan Road, will present four free health seminars regarding issues relevant to the Jewish community.

“What’s in Your Genes?” will be presented by Dr. Parul Jayakar, director of cytogenetics and laboratory and section director of neurogenetics/metabolism at Miami Children’s Hospital’s Division of Clinical Genetics and Metabolism, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21. Jayakar is with the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Miami Children’s Hospital.

Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases offers screenings to the community

March 25, 2013 – Thanks to recent advances in the field of genetics, a simple blood test that examines a person’s genes for changes or mutations is all it takes to determine whether the individual is a carrier. Anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent should be screened. The Victor Center provides full service genetic counseling and screening to all interested individuals and couples, through the hospital’s main campus as well as through community screenings.

February 15, 2018 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been designated the national program office for the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases, an entity dedicated to the prevention of inherited diseases common among the Jewish population.
